The famous statement “Rien ne se perd, rien ne se crée, tout se transforme.” (Nothing is lost, nothing is created, everything is transformed.) by eighteenth century French chemist Antoine Lavoisier forms a major inspiration for David Gumbs' work in which he challenges «Offscreen» perception.
